In order to best care for the whole patient, we use objective tests to find out what other possible factors are at play. Psychological testing helps identify the psychological and social factors that may be worsening, or at least not helping, the patient’s pain complaint. What do we test for? We look at a variety of instruments that play a role in patient’s pain experience. This system allows us to compare your patients to large-scale data that represents the United States general population. The measures in a typical Chronic Pain battery are as follows: Pain Intensity How much it hurts Anxiety Fear (fearfulness, panic), anxious misery (worry, dread), hyperarousal (tension, nervousness, restlessness), and somatic symptoms related to arousal (racing heart ,dizziness). Satisfaction Roles & Activities Satisfaction with performing one’s usual social roles and activities Pain Interference Consequences of pain on relevant aspects of one’s life. This includes the extent to which pain hinders engagement with social, cognitive, emotional, physical, and recreational activities. Physical Function Self-reported capability rather than actual performance of physical activities. This includes the functioning of one’s upper extremities (dexterity), lower extremities (walking or mobility), and central regions (neck, back), as well as instrumental activities of daily living, such as running errands. Depression Negative mood (sadness, guilt), views of self (self- criticism, worthlessness), and social cognition (loneliness, interpersonal alienation), as well as decreased positive affect and engagement (loss of interest, meaning, and purpose). Anger Angry mood (irritability, frustration), negative social cognitions (interpersonal sensitivity, envy, disagreeableness), and efforts to control anger. Social Isolation Perceptions of being avoided, excluded, detached, disconnected from, or unknown by, others.
